Use the break / disengage when the game gives it. In a sticky over-under you may need to deny or pummel first.

Why can't I exit the clinch?

You are in a lock that does not allow a raw break. Deny their transition or change the tie, then separate.

Expect a hand or a kick on the exit. Block or step offline. Do not stand on the line and admire the escape.

A break is not always the right answer. Sometimes you pummel first so you do not hand them the back on the way out.
